Success of the Day: Fluorescence!
Very well-written article that a friend linked to today. It echoes a good many of my concerns with the science PhD process in academia.
It only just touches on the way that industrial science and engineering jobs are derided in academia. This of course ranges from the large faceless 3M types to the small start-up Konarka types (to whom I will admit being a huge fan). From the experiences of some good friends: Woe to the doctoral student who tells his committee that he’s planning on going into industry. I’m lucky enough that, in general, our department seems to be rather good with this, but the underlying vibe is still there.
